Autodigitizing
The creators of autodigitizers want you to believe that all you do is click a button or two and your design is ready to stitch. What they don't tell you is that the resultant design and stitchout are not likely to meet your standards. Some autodigitizing programs offer only minimal capabilities to make the adjustments that are expected in a quality design. They tend to work best only on very simple, well defined, cartoon style images. It may take an experienced designer longer to "correct" an autodigitized design than to create a new one.
Hand Punching
Hand punching allows individual stitches to be placed anywhere, in any direction, at any length. Many of the best designs incorporate a lot of hand punching. Hand punching is normally added after the main design elements are created in an object-oriented digitizing program.
Object Oriented Digitizing Programs
Most digitizing programs are object oriented. "Object oriented" means that each design element is created and maintained as an object. Most objects are created by tracing the raster art (jpeg, bitmap, etc). The artwork is imported into the digitizing program, which allows creation of the necessary objects.

- The circle
- Two eyes
- The mouth
Each object defines a shape, which can have several unique parameters including color, fill type, fill direction, underlay, and pull compensation. Objects are used by most current embroidery digitizing programs. The total design consists of various objects, which are often "traced" around an on-screen graphic. These make good "cartoon" looking designs.
