Backing (underlay)
Underlay
The above represents a column, with the zig-zag underlay stitches visible. A satin cover stitch would normally be sewn on top of the underlay stitches.
Underlay stitches add strength to the design, minimize the push-pull effect, and lift the top threads to enhance the display. There aren't many hard and fast rules about underlay vs top stitches. Usually the Embird default is fine.
- Underlay stitches should be at right angles to cover stitches, or zig-zag under the top stitches.
- Underlay needs to be more dense for materials that have a nap showing through, to help keep the nap from showing through the embroidery.
