Saving File Summary Information; Reformatting drives to NTFS format without losing data
If you bought an external drive, you probably noticed that your File Summary Information cannot be saved with your files. This is a Windows issue; nothing Embird can do about it. But you can resolve this issue, without losing data!
Background:
- Windows XP and Vista support the NTFS file system, which is widely agreed to be "better" than FAT32, and almost all Windows computers in the last few years are sold with NTFS formatted drives.
- However, most external drives are formatted as FAT32 because FAT32 is more universal. If you had an old computer, or were still running Windows 95 or 98, you could use the FAT32 drive, but Windows 95 & 98 didn't support NTFS, so you'd get errors if you connected your NTFS drive to an older system. External drive manufacturers don't want users of old computers calling about "It doesn't work!", so they take the easy way out.
The good news is, you can reformat your external from FAT32 to NTFS without losing data. But I still suggest backing up anything important to you.
For Vista users: Click here for Microsoft's instructions for reformatting without losing data.
For XP users: Click here for Microsoft's instructions for converting to NTFS
And there's probably information available at your friendly Start / Help and Support button.
After the reformat and a reboot, you'll be able to save your File Summary Information.
